I absolutely love photographing Newborns!
Theres a few necessities to plan beforehand in order to make the session perfect for your baby. here are a few suggestions to help you arrange and enjoy a successful newborn session.
I recommend you schedule your newborn session prior to your baby's arrival, to ensure a spot is available. The second trimester is when my clients usually pencil in there due date. Pop me on your official 'baby is here' list and call me to arrange a convenient date and time for your session.
Newborn sessions must be scheduled within 14 days of life. Ideally best time to obtain the nice curvy poses are between 3-7 days old, this is when baby is still so sleepy and I am able to move them into those cute sleepy poses.
The session takes place in the comfort of your own home,if weather is permitting and warm enough we can shoot outside perhaps in a pretty spot under a tree in the garden or a rug on the lawn.I don't need much space to work in just access to good natural light, usually near a large window or in a conservatory is perfect. I bring a soft heater and white noise machine along with me and this helps to keep baby relaxed and cosy during the session.
A happy baby is a well fed baby, feeding and winding before the session can ensure a happy, sleepy, milk drunk baby. Top-ups during the session if required are a good way to keep baby content.
Patience is key and I am happy to spend sometimes 50% of the session time settling baby I between poses and set-ups. Once baby has had all cuddles and milk and nappy changes necessary to obtain a deep sleep the posing can begin and it takes no time at all. Make yourself comfy, relax and even put your feet up, enjoy watching me create your precious memories.
I have a huge collection of props, baskets, wooden bowls, blankets, backdrops, hats, halo's, headbands, trousers, lace, flowers that I bring with me, of course you can use your own props, choose items and fabrics with texture and complimenting colours to make your images truly unique.
It is advisable to have any sibling shots either at the beginning or the end of the session, it is important not to have too much disruption and noise around the baby, a good idea to have noisy pets and children looked after elsewhere whilst the session is taking place.
Mummy and Daddy are encouraged to partake in the session too, I love the shots with baby curled up in Daddies arms or the head in hands shot. A sleeveless vest top or black t-shirt is suitable to wear for these shots. Baby's resting on Mummy's shoulder is another favourite of mine, Mummy can be bare shouldered for this shot as skin on skin always gives a soft pure look to this image.
Last of all if your baby does not sleep during the session, don't worry, wide eyed newborn photos are gorgeous too.
I am constantly on the look out for props and shopping for cute outfits and backdrops to use in my Newborn sessions.
The sessions take place in the comfort of your own home and last between 2-3 hours. The shoot is baby led, I always allow time for feeding, changing, settling. It is an opportunity for Mum & Dad to sit back and relax and watch whilst I arrange your little bundle into the cutest curvy poses and prettiest set ups.
I take pride in my work and have a lifetime of experience working with babies, being a Mother to 3 myself, I understand how precious they are to you and take the uppermost care when handling and moving your baby during the session. I am a perfectionist and strive to deliver images you will cherish forever.
I love the setting up of the shoots using soft cheesecloth in pretty colours and stretchy wraps to snuggle the babies up all cosy, looks super cute.
My most favourite shots of all
No Princess is fully dressed without her crown
There is a wealth of cute outfits to pose the boys in and I never cease to stop collecting more. This baby dinosaur knit is so sweet.
It is important to capture all the tiny details too, such as eyelashes so fine and pretty, little fingers and toes, milk spots on the nose and perfectly formed rose bud lips...memories to cherish...
It's also lovely to include siblings in the shoot, they are often as pleased with their new baby Brother or Sister as us parents are, and are happy to pose sweetly together with them...This shot in particular is beautiful.
